Long before Guy Bartkus’ personal war against life ended with him the sole suspect in blowing up a fertility clinic, and himself, there was a fascination with pyrotechnics.

Hey look, one of these anonymous internet people was insane and became a terrorist. Sure casts a bad light on all of you.

He volunteered that he wanted to kill himself by strapping an explosive to his head, setting the timer for one hour and drugging himself to sleep. He said he lacked access to any drug stronger than codeine. Available explosives were not the problem.

it’s almost like the internet has allowed all kinds of extremists that would otherwise be alone in their extremism find each other in an echo chamber where they’re all “obviously correct” and that any action they choose to take is warranted and approved by their extremist community. with 8+ billion people in the world, of course you can find 1000 online that agree with you.

Anyone want to place bets on how long it is before Elon uses this as an excuse to whisper in Trump’s ear that he needs to classify the Fediverse as a terrorist organization? It’d conveniently shut down competition with Xitter (and other billionaire-owned social media sites) if Mastodon (and Lemmy and PeerTube and Diaspora etc) was shut down for “RaDiCaLiZiNg fErTiLiTy ClInIc BoMbErS” or whatever BS.

I would strongly recommend using a Lemmy/fediverse instance that is not hosted in the US.

For tons of reasons, the fact that it might get shut down by Trump isn’t even in the to five.

It can be a bit expensive, but I’m okay with it if it adds another instance choice for people. Switching over to object storage was an absolute lifesaver.

I never thought I’d own a “.yachts” domain lmao.

A single user instance, expensive? I’m using a hosted VPS with 1 vCPU, 2 Go RAM, 20 Go disque, and that seems like plenty. Although admittedly I’m not federated with many communities, and mostly just play around with my instance as a toy (it’s not this instance, ofc).

Oh sry, I just noticed you do host a few users actually. That’s cool. Do the system requirements ramp up much?

I have quite a bit of disk space from before I moved over to object storage. I can’t size it down so I just roll with it. 4gb of RAM, 70gb disk, 2 Intel vCPUs, then a bucket for object storage (dirt cheap which is nice). I mostly use it for myself and have it federated with a variety of servers and communities. I’ve been in tech for years and like offering it. I also have a Matrix server too but that’s pretty tiny.

lemmy is not even a blip on anyone’s radar and huge majority of its users still primarily use reddit and twitter.
