what does the phrase «i’m going to get rid of you one way or another» imply?

i thought this would imply some sort of death threat and have heard it quite a bit, but it may mean something else and i misinterpret it.

Maybe they wish to get rid of said individual by disassociating from them. Both parties should part ways.
